In this course, for the final project, each student is required to explore the issues discussed and investigated throughout the class. Such issues may be technical in nature, involving the primary software tool (Flash) or others as frame-rate and file-size; they can be formal concerns, such as composition or color; or they might be narrative issues, simply how to create a narrative primarily with images (rather than language). They are encouraged to take into consideration an imaginary ‘camera’ that forms the frame and composition of the image, as well as any movement that may occur, depending on its location/relationship with regard to the content of the story.
The actual stories that the students develop depends on the given term and the given year. Typically, I will suggest that they look at nursery rhymes or brief poems, but that they should steer clear of illustration. Rather than as a constraint, I encourage them to look at the text more as simply a direction to look, and that endless opportunities for creative freedom and expression exist. Who says the cow actually jumped over the moon?
