Object Photos

The subject of these photographs, a series of 12, are cheap mass-produced objects, shot to suggest commercial photography and product placement. Details in the photography itself and in the depicted objects suggest something more than solitary objects. Rather, each is a cluster of ‘things’ as opposed to a singularity: the mass-produced object, its image, the art-object, the commodity that is bought and sold to name a few. Thus, the seemingly unitary breaks down, is refracted into a multitude.

Viewed in a darkened room with small flashlights while videos of varying scales play on other walls, one has a heightened sense of searching for something, in addition to echoing the projection of the videos.

The flaws in the objects themselves, the detritus on the black velvet, imperfectly manufactured plastic or wrinkles in the paper refer to the messiness of sensuous experience, pulling the viewer to the surface of the photo itself, implicating the art object as yet another in the litany of things on view.
