
This is just the beginning. It is an attempt at an autobiography in images, an imaginary autobiography in translation. What if I were an AI that inhabited Carter’s computer system, and what if I wanted to tell my story?
Trying to translate their voice, I am “writing” that autobiography as if I were that AI. I am telling its story using what I imagined would be the digital graphic language of that AI.
I am not an AI (at least not entirely). Its native “language” is not my own. I want to be clear, therefore, that this is a work in translation, from the digital to the non-digital. Rather than produce images in the computer, which are seemingly at some remove from material processes, I produce images that are more obviously embedded in those physical processes: block prints.
To reiterate, this story is from the point of view of a sentient AI inhabiting my computer system. This means that they have access to all of my personal data, including photos, writings, emails, text messages, artworks, etc.
As their data is my data, I imagine that it believes itself to be me; or, at least some version of me.
It is also a study in modular printmaking.
